I myself have not tried to run Pixel Gun 3D on my computer, however I've no doubts it's possible. The only problem is we'd need to program a controller config file, so that the game can translate the keyboard keys to touch configurations. It's potentially possible to program it, but I'd need to know the software first I'm ever to attempt it.
The iOS playing with Android thing is more so a theory at this point. All the iOS players got a pop-up stating there was a new update for Pixel Gun, however there was no update listed in the App Store. This then lead me to theorize that they merged the servers, since it's incredibly unlikely that the pop-up was a coincidental glitch.

Yes, rooting an Android device is rather tricky, as if you do not tune the settings properly, it can either erase all data from the device, or "brick" your device (resulting in it not being able to function whatsoever).
